Island time

This post will be dedicated to pictures and an account of how I’ve found New Zealand thus far:

I’ll start with the simplest question first. “What’s the weather like?”
I think it’s safe to say after two months that I’m not a fan of New Zealand winter. It’s not terribly cold, but it is rather dreary. Blue skies have been a rare occurrence, and I’ve been met with winds that feel like unsafe ocean currents somewhere between 2 and 4 times a week. That being said, the nice days are incomparably gorgeous. When the sun comes out to play, the town seems to wake up and everything is as lovely as you could possibly ask for. Long story short, I’m hyped for summer. Here is a glimpse of one of the nicer days I’ve seen.

Next on FAQs(brought to you by the simple fact that a lot of my friends and family being from the south where we like to eat) is “what’s the food like?”
The food is very similar to home, with a few general and specific differences. For starters, everything here is usually less sweet: cereal, desserts, bread, really everything. Most meals and snacks I’ve had have been less flavorful than I’m accustomed to, and the choices for flavors are more limited. You will not find ketchup-flavored potato chips, not only because ketchup is called tomato sauce, but also because that option simply doesn’t exist here. Cool Ranch Doritos are also off the grocery list because there is no Ranch dressing here. I didn’t consider this to be much of a dilemma until I had chicken tenders and had no clue what to dip them in. A life without Ranch, however, is easily lived in a place where each cup of coffee is divine. It’s unbelievable. I would venture to say that volcanoes, glaciers, glow worm caves, and all other natural wonders aside, this lovely country is worth a visit simply to drink coffee. On top of that, Auckland is a multicultural hub and so, to my delight, a variety of Asian, Indian, and even African delicacies are easily accessible and just as easily devoured. 

The next question is possibly the most important: “what have you been up to?”
It’s hard to know here to begin because the answer is simply lots of things. I anticipate that answer brings up another question: “like what?” In addition to doing a youth group start up and attending weekly staff meetings, I’ve been learning to do lots of different and exciting things and preparing for an audition in November. So far, I’ve learned to play squash, scuba dive, oil paint, make sausage, make a savory pie, and I’ve relearned to play drums and bass. Most importantly, I’m learning(I think) to be patient and to listen when God speaks. More updates on that to come at a later date when I know more. Until then, I hope you enjoy these pictures of the various adventures I’ve had in the past couple of months, and I thank you for your patience in regards to the lack of frequency of which I’ve updated my blog. In addition to sports and detail cooking, I’m also learning to be a blogger. That being said, I’ve heard the request for more frequent posts, and I am happy to comply.     I hope you are doing well. So great to read your blog, and hear of some of what you have been doing . I loved the pictures and the comparison to things back home verses there. Praying for you and can’t wait to meet you.
